MANILA, July 23 (Xinhua) — Left-wing rebels are deploying their hit squads in the Philippines’ capital region of Metro Manila, a military official said on Wednesday.
Sparrow Units, the urban hit squads of the New People’s Army, have returned to Manila to target some government functionaries, including military and police officials, Philippine TV network GMA News reported, citing Arsenio Arugay, chief of National Capital Region Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
The official told reporters on Wednesday that “intelligence information” did neither say how many Sparrow operatives had entered the capital region.
“They have no specific target,” Arugay said, adding “but they have target, of course. We are number one, the Armed Forces and the Philippines National Police.”
He said, “VIPs” (very important persons) are also possible targets.
